Unzipping the news

Seeing is believing. You have heard about the front page as the map to the journey? The front page as a place where you seduce and invite the reader to come in? These guys have a different idea.

So, if you wish to “unveil” what's inside, why not put a zipper on page one?  No, I am not recommending this, but apparently a group of editors in Canada , at a local French-language community newspaper, decided that unzipping the front page to reveal a bit of “flesh” in the form of a second page inside would be the way to do it.

Take a look here. It probably falls into the category of Pages We Would Not Try, or better yet, a good reminder that sometimes when an idea like this comes up, it is better to lie down for 40 seconds, take a deep breath and then execute it, print a sample, put it on your bulletin board, but, please please, do not subject readers to it.

This newspaper appears in Aylmer, Quebec, across the river from Ottawa.

What do you think?

Touché!
