Het Parool and other Garcia Media clients awarded in the 2004 European Newspaper Award Competition.
Het Parool, the Amsterdam daily which Garcia Media redesigned as it converted from broadsheet to tabloid in May has been awarded the top Best Designed Regional newspaper in the 2004 European Newspaper Awards competition.
“I am elated about Het Parool winning this top accolade,” said Mario Garcia. “This is sort of like the little train that could.. We worked on this project with Jan Kny as art director for our team, alongside a very talented group of in-house editors and art directors. With many odds against Het Parool succeeding as it turned from broadsheet to tabloid, the spirit of the editor, Erik van Gruijthuijsen, was a key tool in making this the winning paper it has become. Erik pushed hard, had a great visual sense, and would not let us stop creating till he saw what he wanted. And what he wanted was this vibrant tabloid that still could look serious and credible.”

The European Newspaper Award is a European competition for newspaper design and newspaper concept organized by the newspaper designer Norbert Küpper from Meerbusch (Germany) in co-operation with the journalistic magazines Medium Magazin (Frankfurt), Österreichischer Journalist (Salzburg), and Media Facts (Amsterdam).
The competition is also known as’ Oscar of the Newspaper Branch’. The presentation of the awards will take place in Vienna (Austria) on April 2005.
