Washington Post premieres new design today
The much awaited debut of the Post’s redesign (with Roger Black as consultant) premieres today. You can take a sneak peek at the Post’s design, in the form of an eight-page reader’s guide PDF: here:

The Post’s legendary custom Century Old Style font has been replaced with Miller Daily
Other notables, an overall more typographic approach to detail. I like the nice intros that make you dance into lead pieces. Also there is a greater use of decks for lead stories, and, obviously, a greater differentiation between news and features.
Lead story structures use decks in all caps, vintage 1950s and the days of Edmund Arnold and “newspaper make up”. Nice touch. There are also more secondary headlines used, and what seems to be perhaps an overabundance of references to the online edition.
The opinion page disappoints in its lack of visible change. I imagine this was a sanctuary that Roger was not allowed to walk into. Somehow, the changes we see in news pages are not evident in the editorial page.
As always say when we review a new design:
We have no idea what happened behind the scenes.
We have not seen the many prototypes that Roger Black and his team may have presented.
We do not know the discussions internally about how far they wanted to take the Post.
Overall: this is a design that cleans the Post nicely. A full bath, it isn’t. A good, robust shower, it is.
