Let’s hear it from those readers!

What a surprise to have an actual reader thank me for the work I did on his favorite newspaper.

The photo above captures a happy moment, and also an unusual one. I was a passenger on Lufthansa flight 1113 from Madrid to Frankfurt last week. When the plane landed, and, as I was getting ready to deplane, the Captain stepped out of the cockpit and told me:

Mr. Garcia, thanks for making my favorite newspaper, Die Zeit, such a good looking one. I know about you and your work. Let me take a picture with you.

I was happy to do a picture with Captain Stefan Krey, and I have thanked him for making my day with his comment.

I am still wondering how this Captain Krey was able to find out all the information about me that he had. Normally, when we complete a project, we hear from colleagues in the media about it, but seldom from readers.

After 735 projects in 121 countries, I assume that millions of readers take a look at a newspaper or magazine that I had something to do with each day, yet I seldom hear from a reader! Go figure. That’s why this friendly Captain’s comment took me by surprise.

It would be great to hear what readers and users of the products we work with have to say, and not necessarily in a focus group setting.

Yet, we seldom get any first hand, spontaneous information from readers.

Danke, Captain Krey. Hope you continue to enjoy Die Zeit for years to come.

The newspaper remains the most powerful source of storytelling on the planet. But technology threatens its very existence. To survive, the Editor must transform, adapt, and manage the newsroom in a new way. The Inquirer is a brand that always resonates with me, as it was one of my projects in 1996, so I am aware of the traditions the Inquirer folks hold dear. After all, this is a newspaper that even Benjamin Franklin wrote for. I recall, as we were doing the redesign of The Inquirer, when Max King was editor in chief, how I was reminded, at every step of the process, about the newspaper’s history, the brand’s tradition and how to make sure that it was all preserved as we added more color and created a new set of story structures.
