This is the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog. During the pandemic and as we live through these surreal times, my blog will appear from time to time as projects launch or other events warrant it. Will let you know when we resume daily publishing.
As we at Garcia Media approached this Handelsblatt project, to give Germany’s leading financial daily a new look, we always thought to preserve the “magazine” look that has given its weekend edition a sense of distinction, with exploration of one big theme that starts on the cover.
Monday, July 6, Handelsblatt premiered its new look and this is the first weekend edition, so I thought I would share it with you, thanking acting design director, Michel Becker, for sending it along. He and his team are creative and talented and continue to take the new design to a higher plateau.
The weekend cover: The front page of Handelsblatt is poster like to call attention to a main topic of the weekend that is developed fully inside. This weekend the topic is the world’s economy according to corona!
A regular second front page: When readers open their newspaper, they find, on Page 3, the familiar newsy front page of Handelsblatt:
Development of the cover story: Here is how the main theme of the week is carried out and displayed on inside.
The use of large photos: A key element of this design is the display of larger photographic images on almost every spread of the newspaper. This is what printed newspapers can do so much better than the way we display photos on digital devices.
Special weekend topics: This edition ends with special pages devoted to literature, art, people, and closes with the lead interview on last page.
