It’s the icing on the cake, when projects in which we have enjoyed our involvement and collaboration with the house teams so much then turn around to win accolades at the SND Awards.
This year, the following projects received awards, either for print and/or digital:
South China Morning Post (Hong Kong)—A banner year for this newspaper, with a record 50 SND Awards and 33 for its star Alberto Lucas, graphics director. The awards recognized info- graphics, feature design pages, illustrations and portfolios.
“This is pure journalism… from the germ of the idea to the
final packaging, that is why I am so passionate about this work,” said Alberto , whose 33 awards was the most won by an individual in the competition’s 36-year history. Bravo, Alberto. Bravo, South China Morning Post.
The Washington Post—Another record setting year for the Post with 148 awards in the print competition and a World’s Best finalist nod. I asked Greg Manifold, the Post’s Design Director, how he has since the SND awards change over the years:
“I think what wins hasn’t changed – smart ideas, well-played photography and hitting big events out of the park. What’s changed for me is my desire to see how organizations have evolved or are maintaining success in a constantly changing landscape. And, most importantly, which organizations are having success digitally as well as print.”
Postmedia (Canada), where we worked with a total rethink of newsroom operations, including design across the platforms:
(1 silver for Ottawa),
American City Business Journal (ACBJ)== 15 awards, including 7 in redesign categories, according to Jon Wile, creative director.
Gulf News (of Dubai)–40 awards, 39 for Gulf News and 1 for its sister publication, the weekly XPRESS. Deisgn Director Miguel Gomez summarizes the feelings of his talented team:
“We are proud of the results archived this year by the team, it is good to find that the awards are distributed in different categories, layout, illustration and online, this shows the different skills of the group.”
Times of Oman/Shabiba won 154 awards. The teams of these two fabulous publications rained #1 in the medal ranking.
They received three JSRs (Special Judges Recognition) for their feature pages (SND citation: “For taking the bold risk”), for the World Cup supplement covers (“For the creative range of spirit”) and for their World Cup info graphic (“For the indefatigable creativity”), making the Times of Oman and Shabiba the only Middle East newspapers to receive Special Judges Recognition.
With so many awards for their print efforts, I asked Adonis about their unusual investment in print at Times of Oman/Shabiba:
“It’s great to see that the hard work that my team had put last year is being rewarded. The effort that we did for our World Cup coverage is a testament that in this digital age, every newsroom should never cease to champion print. We won the awards, but let’s not forget we have also won the hearts of our readers.”
Digital awards include The Age (Australia) , and Postmedia (Canada) (for the web, tablet, mobile design in Ottawa, Montreal, and Calgary).
Postmedia (Canada)--8 Awards for the Postmedia redesign.
From Creative Director for Postmedia, Gayle Grin:
“It is a great honour for Postmedia to be recognized by the Society for News Design and news judges from around the world. The design was very important to the strategy. Our goal was to create consistency of design in three metro markets and at the same time across four different platforms, while respecting the unique features of each platform. The design was an exciting process and thrilling to see implemented. And to receive these design awards is reaffirming.
