Front page of today’s Bild Am Sonntag
One week into his administration and President Obama continues to dominate the front pages worldwide. The always effervescent and pictorial Bild am Sonntag, German’s largest distribution daily, devotes the front page of today’s Sunday edition to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. With a headline that suggests that “the love of this couple” will be able to extend beyond the boundaries of the United States, and help solve problems elsewhere, Bild also goes further, to emphasize the amorous relationship between the President and his First Lady, ending with a full tongue-in-cheek page of the Obamas, and the headline: Finally, sex is back in the White House.

This is the front page of the Yale Daily News, designed by Horace Williams
Here is the cover of a special Inauguration section, designed by Greta Carlson
Here are the two pages sent by Reed Reibstein, who has every reason to feel quite proud of the work he and the YDN team carried out in covering the President’s Inauguration. In Reed’s words:
The first page is our A1 front ; our A-section was 12 pages of non-inauguration news. The second page is for the 8 pages of inauguration coverage in the B-section. We are extremely proud of how we covered the inauguration—we sent more than 15 reporters, photographers, and videographers to Washington and produced 15 excellent stories, while many of the other Ivy papers printed only one.
Moreover, the entire issue was certainly the best-designed newspaper I have ever worked on; as the editor, Tom Kaplan, wrote the editorial board with very little hyperbole, this issue “very well could be the single best-designed issue in the 131 years of this newspaper.”
Both pages are excellently designed. However, the cover of the special section, with a “type attack” approach makes the reader take notice. It is a radical departure from the visual cliché of a photo poster for such occasions. Kudos to Reed and his team. We know that it requires team effort to produce this level of work, especially in a college daily. In addition to Tom and Reed, other staff members lending support to such visual presentation are Bharat Ayyar, managing editor, and, specifically for the pages shown here, production & design editors Horace Williams, who designed the “Remaking America” A1, and Greta Carlson, who designed the “44” B1. Two other production & design editors, Catie Gliwa and Nick Huang, and Reed assisted and advised.
A Portuguese friend, Paulo Murteira, shares with us his country’s version of President Obama’s now famous and overused slogan:
