I was happy to pick up a copy of The Wall Street Journal weekend edition while passing through the Atlanta airport and was surprised to see that it was the inaugural launch of the new weekend package.
In the words of editor Gerald Baker, this is a “completely reimagined way for our readers to consume their business news”.
“We know the weekend is an opportunity for us to deepen our bond with readers, who experience The Wall Street Journal in a different way, deeper, more wide ranging, more for pleasure than obligation.”
Apparently, one way to meet that goal has been the addition of new section called Exchange, which now joins Review and Off Duty, as total lean back sections. Exchange, however, is newsier, and it is more a way of promoting the news that readers should know for the week ahead, sort of lean back with many lean forward moments.
Baker describes Exchange as offering “addictive recurring features” and “deep reporting that illuminates the behind the scenes stories and people of the week’s biggest business and finance news.”

I admit this was a rather thin (6-page) section, dominated by long texts and large ads, but it shows that you can monetize your operation with topics that appeal to niche audiences.
Here is a front page from Guatemala’s Nuestro Diario (courtesy of Homero Hinojosa) depicting the aftermath of the eruption of the Fuego volcano that killed dozens and injured hundreds.
