The issue of a free press continues to be a powerful one for discussion in many parts of the world, including Central America.
Just this week Nicaragua’s oldest and most widely read newspaper, La Prensa, published its Friday edition with only a blank front page to protest what the editors claim is the government’s withholding of ink, paper and other materials necessary for the printing of the newspaper.
The only text on the front page is a headline that reads:
Can you imagine what it would be like to live without information?
Then in an editorial which appeared on Page 2, the editors write:
“The editorial board of La Prensa newspaper has taken the decision to publish our edition today Friday with a blank front page, as we go into 20 weeks since the Office of Custom Services has retained and hijacked the essential materials we need to print, materials which are rightfully La Prensa’s and which arrived in September 2018.”
