Weekend reads of interest

Here are some items that caught my attention during the week. All positive news that should make us feel good about our industry and where it’s headed.

A new Tyler Brulé publication

The Entrepreneurs is already an established brand for Monocle Radio, a podcast that deals with inspiring people working with successful companies.  Now Tyler, who loves print and always makes sure it remains a relevant part of his media empire, announces that The Entrepreneurs will be an annual publication covering the same types of stories that have made the podcast so popular.

Here is a video announcing the launch of the new publication:

There is power in this union

It’s a new association to look out for the interest of newspapers, based on the union of two familiar groups,  the Inland Press Association and Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, which joined this past week at its inaugural annual meeting in Chicago.

Highlight:

America’s Newspapers unites two of the oldest press associations to form one of the industry’s largest advocates for newspapers and the many benefits to their communities, civil life, freedom of expression and democracy.

America’s Newspapers has adopted a mission of redoubling the commitments of its legacy associations to explain, defend and advance the vital role of newspapers in democracy and civil life. It will put an emphasis on educating the public on all the ways newspapers contribute to building a community identity and the success of local businesses.

In speaking up for newspapers, the new industry organization will remind the public and the market that newspapers produce magazines, specialty publications and community events. Newspapers are multimedia operations that publish on all digital platforms and mobile devices and offer digital marketing services.

FT’s program to attract young readers

Here is a program that may interest publishers everywhere as it involves attracting the very young, and we are talking about readers as young as 16. It is a new Financial Times program to appeal to school students by creating more focused content and, in a novel twist, releasing a board game. One of the outcomes is that by instilling regular reading habits in younger people, they go on to subscribe to one of the FT’s university student packages.

Highlight:

The FT Schools initiative, where students between 16 and 19 years old can create online accounts giving them access to the FT’s content, began in the U.K. in June 2017 and expanded globally in January 2018. FT Schools now has more than 40,000 student accounts at 2,800 schools in 101 countries. As part of the program, students receive weekly emails featuring content tied to their specific fields of study, whether that’s economics, politics or the environment. It also shares video content and more tactical help with articles about how to get ahead in exams and interviews.

For the most part, the FT Schools initiative has used existing FT content and packaged it in relevant and thematic ways that map with the school curriculum. Two content areas it wants to expand are around career advice for life beyond school and financial literacy, hence releasing the board game. The game, called “Road to Riches,” is designed to help teach smart money management and investment without seeming dry. Students and teachers already part of the program get a free edition of the game, otherwise, it costs £28 ($34.38). Released Oct. 2., the publisher said it has had over 400 applications for the game.

THE INTERROGATOR / EDITION 30

Mario García

Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
