Wake up: the news medium of the future is here

Among Business Week’s Idea 2009: Designing a Better World—the newspaper of the future, which sits on a cradle and wakes you up in the morning

The magazine Business Weekhas sponsored Idea 2009:Designing a Better World, seeking innovative design ideas for a variety of fields.

Of course, the gathering of young innovators included a concept for the newspaper of the future, along with sleek TVs and sharp-looking computer monitors all the way to the more futuristic and “unreal” concepts.

We were quite fascinated by the approach to the newspaper. No, it is not printed, but what comes out of a “Kindle-like” wall mounted unit is the front page of a newspaper as we know it today. In fact, it is the venerable New York Times.

Oh, yes, the unit on the wall also plays alarm clock. It wakes you up at whatever time you wish to get the wake up call. But, alas, it does not make your favorite coffee or tea——not yet. Take a look.

Pure Design download: Drop caps: Help or hindrance?

Caps (or drop initials) are one of the favorite tools in the designer’s bag. From the front page to the inside, one sees them often. They add elegance, guide the eye to the start of a story and provide some great relief in the midst of a sea of text. However, drop initials are never a substitute for a good subhead that enhances the story.

Jacky was a hit on Sunday

Jacky captivated many of you, so he will be back next Sunday

Frank Deville’s dog, Jacky, made a cameo appearance in this blog yesterday (see above), and we joked that the Luxembourg-based pooch was an avid reader of the German newspaper, Bild Am Sonntag. Well, many of you wrote to say that you found this dog exceptionally cute and smart. So, by popular demand, Jacky will be back Sunday to tell us which Bild Am Sonntag story he sniffed as the best. Stay tuned for more of Jacky, who apparently prefers his newspaper “in print” and definitely NOT online.

Now that I have fully presented the first of six sections of Pure Design on TheMarioBlog, I am offering the entire initial section, “Words,” available for download—all 33 pages of it. This may be useful for those of you saving or printing out Pure Design and will be done following each of the remaining sections. At the end of our journey through words, type, layout, color, pictures, and process, I will publish the entirety of Pure Design in one file.
