It happened Sunday morning.
I followed my Sunday ritual which is reading some of the News briefings from The New York Times, CNN and The Washington Post before I make coffee and retrieve the only print newspaper I get: The Sunday New York Times.
A push notification was the first thing that popped up on my phone to inform me that the controversial G7 Summit for June 2020 would no longer be held at President Trump’s Miami Resort. The choice of that venue had been vastly criticized by politicians of both parties, as well as media pundits.
So, by the time I got to the briefings, THIS breaking news had not caught up with those newsletters.
I suddenly realized what a task it is for editors in newsrooms today to keep up with the fast pace of breaking news. The push notification beats the more timely prepared briefing, and so on.
That is how Brian Stelter, host of CNN”s Reliable Sources, opened his Sunday show.
Take a look at the segment here:

It was a validation, perfectly articulated, of what I experienced that same morning with one news item.
This will require the most astute content managers in every newsroom. Forget traffic cops, we will need to have a SWAT team of trained editors who can keep up with the pace of the “shock cycles”. I imagine that with an election a year away, and an impeachment inquiry providing us with surprises daily, the shock cycles are only beginning.
Journalists need to flex their muscles to keep up.

Mario García
Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
