When my own clients ask me about the sustainability of ePapers, my answer continues to be the same:
Keep them, ePapers are not for everyone, but there is a loyal following among your older readership.
The results of the 2022 Visiolink E Paper Study reaffirm that statement.

But mobile on the rise for reading ePapers:
The power of podcasts
While the Visiolink study is primarily about ePaper readers, it devotes a portion to highlight what we already knew based on our own observations in focus groups for news titles globally, especially to attract those elusive young readers:
Podcasts could be the key. : 40 percent of podcast listeners are below 35 years, so by adding this feature to your ePaper, you can make it more attractive to a younger audi- ence.
How can you do this?
Display your podcast offerings prominently on home pages and on the front page of ePapers.
How study was conducted
Vitec Visiolink conducted a survey among the European ePaper readers on behalf of our clients. Some of the findings are based on the answers to 24 questions from 3446 respondents representing 17 European newspaper titles.
To further explore the tendencies in digital publishing, the researchers utilized data from our Business Intelligence Team analyzing more than 2400 newspaper titles spread across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovakia, and Ireland.
It is a mobile world, and 82% of all content is consumed on a mobile device worldwide, not just news, but all sorts of documents, especially pdfs. If your company is in the business of creating content, then you need to start thinking from small to large. Create that content for the smallest platform, where a majority of the users are consuming it.
Our Garcia Media Mobile Storytelling workshops are proven to introduce your editorial team to the way we write, edit and design for mobile platforms. It is a one-day program that involves a presentation (where I summarize my Columbia University class content), and follow it with a hands on workshop.
