Frank and I complete a morning run by the beach last year: ideal place for runners training for races

Off to Maspalomas, in the Canary Islands (home of my maternal grandparents), a great place with dunes that extend for kilometers. Frank and I do daily early morning runs when the cool breezes still make it comfortable for the runner, before it gets quite hot. I have decided to totally relax this year, which means staying away from blogging and news (don’t know if I will be able to do that, but we try!). So, don’t be surprised if I suddenly appear with a blog of interest while on holiday, but it would have to be something very special.

Come back June 15 when we will resume our daily commentaries, plus postings of you reactions to TheMarioBlog first anniversary celebration, which are pouring in via email. If you have any comments, do send me an email, mario@garcia-media.com.

See you soon!

TheMarioBlog: first year anniversary coming

blog post image

Time has gone very fast, and we will celebrate the first anniversary of this blog June 17. To that effect, I would like to hear from you, who honor me with your daily visits, and find out what you like about this blog, and ways to make it better. That is our aim. It has been a year of experimentation for someone new to the platform. Several of you have asked me to re-post some special entries, and I will be happy to do so. Others would like follow ups for stories which I covered. Let me hear from you. You can post your comments here or email me directly at mario@garcia-media.com.

Waiting to hear from you.

Four thoughts on why some American newspapers lag behind their counterparts around the world

“Why are American newspapers less willing to experiment, to take that leap into the future, to analyze their products and to adapt them to the realities of a multi-platform world?,” an editor in India asks me. I have thoughts on the matter:

The Path of the Story: From Mobile to Online to Print

Storytelling has not changed much since the days of Aesop’s fables, but we now have a variety of media thru which to tell those stories.

Putting on the Ritz—the design audition

Gone are the days when a media firm would call its preferred design consultant for that most important of jobs: the redesign of the newspaper. Today, in a world of choices everywhere from Starbucks (make mine a frapuccino) to The Campbell Apartment ,that bar in New York City hidden in a corner of Grand Central Station (try the lychee martini –lycheetini), it is no surprise that publishers ALSO hold auditions to see what design firm can provide the most exciting, envigorating and youthful prototype.

The Boulevard Press knows its audience well

The boulevard press’ formula of content and visual surprises should serve as inspiration to the more traditional press

The New Ugly, The Plain Ugly, The Not So Ugly: How do we define beauty in our craft?

Rarely a day goes by when we, as designers presenting project, don’t hear someone in the group referring to a page or concept as “ugly”. Some don’t dare say the word, and quickly dispatch other phrases to let you know that this UGLY page simply will not do it:

From Alexandre Giesbrecht
I don’t think there’s a need to repost old entries (maybe a link to the most relevant?). I really like being a daily visitor in here. Very rarely do I find content that doesn’t fully interest me, and even when that happens it interests me at least a little bit. What I especially love are the reviews of redesigns and stories about old redesigns, like a companion to the “Print Design” book. What I’d love to see was more people contributing with commentaries, sharing opinions and opening discussions, but that up to the readers more than to the author.

From Gustavo Torres Adelantado:
More than “Congratulations” I have to say “Thank you”, since following your
blog everyday has been very productive.I have been reading your “case studies” for many years. So, I was delighted
when I knew that you’d begin with your blog.A real admirer of you for the work you’ve done through hundreds of
newspapers:

From Solene Cesbron

First of all I would like to thank you for your blog and the effort you put in it to inform, educate and entertain us as well on a daily basis about newspapers and media in general.
I read your blog within the google reader window on my igoogle page so I never miss a post. It has become a valuable source of information for the young art director that I am. Over the last eighteen months, my interest for editorial design has grown stronger and I’m pretty sure that your blog, since its lauching, has played an important role by offering precious insights.

I especially find the posts about the various projects of newspapers and magazines creation or rethinking you do all around the world very engaging.
Reading your blog, I’m now convinced that newspapers are not dying (at least not all of them) but are subjected, like us, to the laws of evolution and that it is time for them to take a major step forward to adapt to the new multiplatform-scanner readership. Over the last 12 months, I’ve been learning a lot from Center of Visual Impact to Multiplatform Storytellling through Second Day Headlines and better navigation to eventually found out that it’s visual storytelling I’m passionate about, not making things pretty.

I’d love to see more from The Mario Classroom or articles likes the one about “Simple Solutions to Effective Art Direction” that highlight important design points for a better visual support of the content.
Thank you again for the great content you offer us. I wish the Mario Blog many more years of succes!
