TAKEAWAY: President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and even Oprah are coming to Copenhagen to pitch their favorite city, Chicago, as the site of the 2016 Olympics. Newspapers, too, are saving Page One space for this not so routine announcement of a winning Olympic site city.
The always elegant Politiken opts for an illustration showing the city’s redcarpet for the Obamas
Danish national newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, big poster treatment for the Obama comes to town story.
Copenhagen’s free distribution daily, 24 Timer (24 Hours) joins in the excitement of the day
The Chicago newspapers had other more important stories to cover on their Page One.
In the US: The Virginian Pilot devotes front page space to Obama’s pitch
Here are some newspaper front pages of today, announcing the arrival of The Obamas to pitch their city, Chicago, to the Olympic committee organizers in charge of selecting a city for the 2016
Olympics. It is reported that Chicago’s favorite daughter, Oprah, will also accompany the First Couple to Copenhagen.
I was a tad disappointed that the main Chicago newspapers did not rally to the story as did the Danish ones. However, I also see that there was a major local story of consequence. Still, I went in looking for a better Page One packaging of the Obama/Olympic story. After all, there is history in the making here, regardless of the outcome: Obama would be the first U.S. president to actually appeal in person to the International Olympic Committee for an Olympics event. Looking at the Sun Times and the Tribune, one gets the feeling that these papers appeared a little bored by it all. Warning: I only had access to the front pages. Perhaps the big splash is inside? But even the popular and always eye-opening Red Eye did not go wild with the Obama/Olympic story.
Among the US newspapers I sampled, it was The Virginian Pilot that led with Obama’s visit to Denmark. Good job! Perhaps Richmond should try to become an Olympic city sometime.
I am honored to be one of the speakers this week at the WAN/IFRA conference, The 2015 Newsroom: High Standards with Low-Cost Solutions, in Prague, Czech Republic, Oct. 1-2.
I will keynote a segment of the conference titled “Visual journalism: the rise of non-narrative news”., a discussion about the industry today, the importance of convergence as a state of mind in the newsroom, and case studies of recent projects dealing with print/online/mobile.
By the way, the Wirtschafts Blatt case study, will be one I will present at this conference, with more detail.
