The Philippine Daily Inquirer: launching a rethink

The countdown has begun for the launch of a totally rethought and redesigned Philippine Daily Inquirer: all signals are go as our first ever project in the Philippines starts its marketing campaign to alert readers to the changes coming.

This is the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog and will be updated as needed. The next blog post is Monday, Oct. 3.

The marketing department of the Inquirer launches its campaign: Seeing the Inquirer in a new light.

It has taken 14 months.  It has mobilized every member of the Inquirer team from advertising and marketing to newsroom and production. And on October 6, readers will see the new Inquirer.

We at Garcia Media are extremely proud to have been a part of this initiative and I start my travel toward Manila today to be there on time to work with the editors and designers prior to the launch.  Assisting me in this project as art director for Garcia Media, the mega talented Adonis Durado.  Creative /Art director for the Inqurer, Ralph Bagares.  Project leader has been Imelda Alcantara.

I will be reporting from Manila in the next few days introducing various aspects of this project.  For now, here are some pages from the infographics stylebook .

At The Washington Post: less is best

There is the Oscars, the Tonys, the Emmys, and the Grammys, and, now, for reporters at The Washington Post, there is The Brevity Cup—are you listening, dear friend Roy Peter Clark, master writing guru and author of How to Write Short? A newsroom-wide initiative to cut down on editorial flab.

I hope newsrooms around the globe tune in!

In a unique two-day event, you’ll hear industry experts address the reasons for success and failure of the look and feel of news on the web and in apps. And you’ll meet the designers who will tackle these challenges in a unique project that launches with our October event in New York.
