The New York Times rethinks/redesigns Business

It’s no longer Business Day. Call it just Business. Look for new content, too.

This the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog and will be updated as needed. The next blog post is scheduled for Monday, November 19.

It has been Business Day for so long, but now, in its total rethinking of the business coverage, both for digital and print, The New York Times has dropped the word Day and it will be simply Business. It makes sense.

The Sunday Business section has a new look, and, based on the first edition of November 11, it is quite a splash. Will it be a poster-like design each Sunday? That would be wonderful. Take a look at the first issue with the new look below.

My observation is that there will be greater emphasis on a cover that we know is hot globally: technology. Second topic of interest: careers.

There is definitely less text than what we found in the previous version:

With the new design changes also come content additions that I already enjoy .  It shows what can happen when a well known brand, with a highly respected product, creates new products inspired by what serves as a good foundation.

These are some of the new features readers will see in the new Times’ business coverage:

A selection of new columns and features include:

  • Meanwhile,” a new illustrated feature by the graphic journalist Wendy McNaughton, that “focuses on overlooked objects, unknown individuals and secret trends in the economy.” The logo suggests informality and fun, as we also see in the first story below about those tallboy beer cans.

  • With Interest,” a weekly Sunday newsletter highlightis the most important news about technology, companies, markets and more. “With Interest” will feature three essential items from the past week, plus three that are in store for the week ahead and will also run in the print version of Sunday Business. I have already subscribed!

  • Work Friend,” a new column offering practical, tactical advice about the office, money, careers, and work-life balance. The column’s author changes every quarter.

  • Like A Boss,” a new interview series, that takes the form of a workweek diary from a rising talent in a creative field. It runs bi-weekly, alternating with “Corner Office,” a series of interviews with CEOs, which expands to a full page.
