The New York Times: endorsing two candidates!

That’s a first for the Times. To me, it is an example of transformation at work. When doing the unthinkable seems logical.

I am not sure how much weight an endorsement from The New York Times will have among voters who will get out to vote in the Democratic primary elections ready to start in about two weeks with the much promoted Iowa caucuses.

That’s not my reason for mentioning this item from The New York Times.

I am happy (and even proud!) to say that politics is not my favorite subject, or one in which I am well versed, beyond cocktail party and hair salon discussions if I am driven to them by someone else.

However, I am interested in the subject of transformation, the subject of Volume 1 of my new book, The Story.

As I write in the book:

The dynamics of change
Change has to come from the heart. Change is organic. To be real change, it requires that we change our mind about what was—and open them up to what could be.

This is exactly what the editorial board members of The New York Times seem to have done here. In their own words:

Hong Kong’s Metro stops print edition

Another free newspaper stops its print edition, this time it is Hong Kong’s Metro Daily, the city’s edition of Metro, which had been rumored for sometime to be having financial difficulties and to have retrenched many staff after failure to pay their salaries. The total outstanding dues exceeded HK$1m.

Metro publishes free newspapers around the world with 25 editions in 16 countries in 14 languages. Metro Daily was the first free newspaper in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong version was first launched on 15 April 2002.

Every time one of these free newspapers stops its print edition is another reminder of how much those commuters —who represent the key audience for free newspapers —are too busy clinging to their smartphones, to pay attention to a printed product. I am sure this is not the last of the free papers to evaporate.

One good thing: Fewer abandoned newspaper pages on the seats of buses, trains and subway cars.
