The iPhone Photo Contest

What we in the newsroom can learn about this magnificent tool that is our constant companion. No camera was ever handier and perhaps easier to use.
Why every reporter should take a look at what’s possible.

I was not aware that there was even a contest to reward the best from iPhone photography.

However, since 2007 there has been an  iPhone Photography Awards competition.  According to the organizers, the quality of the photos entered gets better all the time. I was quite impressed by the winning entries, which you may see here https://www.washingtonpost.com/photography/2019/07/25/these-are-winners-th-annual-iphone-photography-awards/?utm_term=.b291102a2dc9

And here is the winning entry from Diogo Lage from Portugal , who placed first in the Photographer of the Year category.

I think the value of such a contest, speaking as a person who tries to convince reporters to become visual journalists, is that it provides us with a good reason to accept that the iPhone can be an incredibly useful tool for all of us storytellers.

Especially as we practice more linear storytelling where we blend the narrative of text with visual images, the iPhone can be our best ally.

Let’s hear it for the winners of this contest——an inspiration for everyone aiming high in mobile visual storytelling.
