The chatty newsletters that make a difference

Communicating with our audience these days is more informal, as if the editor puts her arm around the readers’ shoulders and says: Hey, neighbor, how is it going?

I admit I was totally surprised by the informal and chatty style of this unexpected New York Times “newsletter” in my inbox.

It was titled “Wait….”, just like that.

Then came the rest: This popped up on my screen before I retired to sleep in Berlin on this historic Thursday, April 18, the day the redacted Mueller Report was released. The news of what was revealed (and that which was not) dominated all news cycles everywhere.

So here comes the Wait…. document and shouts the following:

Then along came highlights of the Mueller Report, of course, but then this line which was so unlike the tone of voice of The New York Times we have come to know for decades—-the one that was often referred to as “the gray old lady”. No longer!

Then, just like that, the Wait newsletter takes us from the seriousness of the much discussed Mueller Report to, voilá, Bridal Fashion Week.…..

While I had never seen Wait, and don’t know if it is a regular new feature of the Times, I like it. It is informal, it seems to talk to just me and it was as sweet before going to sleep as a piece of Godiva chocolate under my pillow.

Keep Wait coming………
