In the words of Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic:
“…. today we are launching our newest editorial initiative, a section that will provide readers with essential and sophisticated journalism about the building-block unit of civilization: the family. We will be covering parenting as a fundamental part of our work. We will provide advice to those who seek it. We will cover politics and economics through the prism of families’ experiences. We will study families in all their diversity, and in their largest contexts.
“Our coverage of family matters will express itself digitally, of course, but also in our print magazine, documentaries, and podcasts.”
I have checked it out and stories range from How to Parent an Olympic Athlete to How Spanking Affects Later Relationships. Along the way, a story about The Movement to Bury Pets Alongside People.
The Family section appears in TheAtlantic.com—representing what the editors describe as “the centerpiece of an expansive, multi-platform reporting initiative on the cultural, political, and economic forces shaping America’s families. “
The Atlantic is developing a reporting team to the Family coverage. Its focus on family will include stories in the magazine, video, a weekly newsletter, and live events.
The Atlantic is also expanding into additional areas of editorial focus to include expanded coverage of Hollywood and culture, and of technology and Silicon Valley, a new Ideas section, and more about politics and policy . Some 100 new staff are added for the expansion.
It’s worth taking a look. Another new product for an established, iconic brand, with emphasis on multiplatform journalism.
