The Apple Watch and news

Four years later, what impact is the Apple Watch having on how we receive news?

I don’t know about you, but I bought my Apple Watch the moment it came out in the market April 24, 2015 and I still have it wrapped around my wrist.

And, while it perhaps did not become the major platform for news alerts that some forecast, it is still where I first get my fill of those headlines I need to know about.

The reason I am blogging about this is because, lately, as in the past few weeks, I am beginning to see more “visuals” attached to those push notifications, like this one just received:

Minutes after I received this one, and while I was busy in a conference, a second one also arrived.

What’s different? In some of the early images that popped into my watch years ago, the photos were sometimes of a “riot” so not much could be seen. Right now, I am seeing more focused images, as in just a face. Take a look at how The New York Times introduced its contents to the Apple Watch five years ago.

Perhaps I have missed them, but I don’t recall seeing a cooking recipe on my Apple Watch.

Apple and the Watch

The Apple Watch has been good in terms of revenue for Apple. Revenues for Apple’s wearable products, particularly the Apple Watch and AirPods wireless headphones, have continue to grow, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook .

“On a trailing basis, … the revenue for wearables is already 50 percent more than iPod was at its peak,” Cook told CNBC in an interview with “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer.

Apple is continuing to lead the rest of the wearables market, according to data from IDC, with sales of the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Beats headphones helping the iPhone maker maintain its position in a market that grew 31.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018.

However, The New York Times reported recently that perhaps the Apple Watch has not become the “fashion” item that some thought it would be.

Honestly, I don’t see a lot of Apple Watch discussion in the newsrooms I visit, especially outside the US. But, it is obvious that the major media brands continue to publish their push notifications on the watch. There may be many who, like me, first find out about the news on the face of their Apple Watch.
