Taking a look at Newspaper Design, the new book

I have now seen a print edition of Javier Errea’s new book, Newspaper Design. It is beautifully illustratated and makes for a perfect coffee table book that designers won’t be able to keep their hands (and eyes) off.

This is the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog and will be updated as needed. The next blog post is Monday, July 30.

We had already expressed our admiration for Newspaper Design, which we described in this blog as Javier Errea’s love letter to printed newspapers. Now we have seen an actual printed copy of the book.

Nothing like a printed version of a book that is designed to please, chockfull of fantastic examples of newspapers that we all know, the darlings of the newspaper design crowd, and that truly show us how exciting print design can be.

Again, I thank Javier Errea for devoting a chapter of the book to me and my work, which humbles and honors me greatly.

I hope you have a chance to get your own copy of Newspaper Design. This is one time when print is best and I urge you to rush to order your own copy.

There is a love of love for printed newspapers to be shared here.

If you are a veteran designer, you will reaffirm why you first entered this wonderful field.

If you are a young designer who does not remember life without Google, you will be led by the hand into a gallery of masterpieces that will convince you that you have picked the right field of work, and, who knows? Maybe you will get closer to those in your organization doing the design of print pages and ask to get your feet wet.

You won’t regret it.

People Don’t Trust the News—What Can Designers Do About It?

Prediction: if truth will prevail in media, it’s the visual journalists (i.e. designers) who will bring it back

Highlight of the review:

…one thing most experts can agree on is that digital storytelling is the lifeblood of any media company. As Newspaper Design: Editorial Design From the World’s Best Newsrooms purports, digital-first means visual-first, and that means a lot more designers in the news room.
