TAKEAWAY: I happen to be passing thru Germany on this Monday, the day after the German team beat England with a robust 4-1. Happy front page headlines tell the story.
As I watched the action on TV Sunday in the company of Germans and Luxemburgers, I already knew the level of excitement that the victory of the German team generated as it beat England 4-1.
Upon landing at Frankfurt airport this morning, in transit to my Istanbul flight, the first thing I saw were two German flags protruding from the small window of the cockpit of a Lufthansa Airbus parked on the tarmac. The flags, on the captain’s side, tell the story of a proud people savouring the victory over an old World Cup rival.
Following is a sampling of pages of German dailies I found at the airport lounge.
No need for translation and no question about how BILD feels this Monday morning
The Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung, Die Welt display big photos of the match on page one
Suddeutsche Zeitung uses a combo of two photos on page one, directly under newspaper logo
Back page of The Independent: No defence. No excuses.
It was the narrative of defeat for The Independent of London, whose front page uses words dramatically with words superimposed over photos of ball penetrating the goalmouth and the word OVER on it, while the words …AND OUT appear over photo of the team’s coach.
The headline on the page reads: THey scored a perfectly good goal that wasn’t awarded, but England shouldn’t complain. Germany outplayed them.
