Before and after redesign: the new Metro, slicker to attract more sophisticated readers

This past week we discussed the closing of thelondonpaper, and offered our insights into what we think the future free newspaper of the future might be like. Coincidentally, Metro, the one free newspaper distribution firm that started it all in Stockholm, introduced new design strategies for three of its titles in the US: Philadelphia, New York, Boston.

The aim is to make the free newspaper look a bit more sophisticated, to attract more elite audiences, a trend that we see worldwide for the free distribution dailies in major metropolitan markets across the globe.

A Reuters press release refers to the redesign as incorporating
heightened expert analysis, commentary, powerful pictures and reader views.

“This is a bigger change than a standard redesign; we are in the middle of
transforming the newspaper itself,” says Per Mikael Jensen, CEO of Metro
International. “Our ambition is to continue to deliver the free newspaper of
choice.”

Transformation is the right word, which is what many of the existing free newspapers will be doing. Any new free newspapers appearing will probably follow the same “higher level readership” model, which, by the way, I believe was pioneered by Spain’s successful ADN, now also appearing in Colombia.

We will continue to write about this timely topic in future blogs.

Jacky’s picks from today’s Bild Am Sonntag are here.

This Sunday, Bild am Sonntag’s front page story is NOT about some titillating scandal or a celebrity paparazzi shot. Instead, it is a very complete special report about 60 foods that we like and the calories that they contain. The report is extensive, well illustrated and takes us into a sort of “charticle” where the images and the captions tell the story: primarily, caloric value of food that we all like.

Who is Jacky?

Jacky also liked the personality stories in today’s Bild am Sonntag: two exclusive interviews, one with Michael Jackson’s father, Joe and the other with Brazilian best-selling author, Paulo Coelho.

Finally, Jacky was lured to a double page spread about turtles, with the enticing headline: The Woman and the Sea.

Jacky belongs to Frank Deville. The Luxembourg-based pooch is an “avid reader” of the German newspaper, Bild Am Sonntag. Every Sunday Jacky picks stories and interesting graphics in Bild Am Sonntag , the German newspaper.
