Video (Spanish language) shows the newsroom team of El Tiempo welcoming its star edtitor for a day, Juanes
For his front page, Juanes opted for a simple and direct graphic that tells the story. Under the headline that reads, Nobody Wins, the front page is devoted to a tic tac toe game of targets and rifles.
Here the staff shares stories of what it was like to have the pop star Juanes as editor for a day:“He took it seriously,” says Beiman Pinilla, design director
For page 2, pop star Juanes declared his plan to devote this special issue of El Tiempo to peace and reconcilliation in Colombia
The green section of El Tiempo, devoted to in depth reading, leads with a story about Portraits of Peace in the Midst of War
The orange section of El Tiempo, devoted to leisure and entertainment,
is all about a local community coming together through urban art
For the full page graphic of the day, Juanes chose the theme of “what war costs us”.
For the food page, Juanes went for “cooking with a conscience: eco and social recipes”
In Colombia, the daily El Tiempo, the country’s largest circulation newspaper, invited the pop singing sensation, Juanes, to be editor for one day.
Juanes is one of Colombia’s most famous entertainers, second only to the global pop star Shakira, and the US television personality of Modern Family sitcom fame, Sofia Vergara.
Juanes opted for a theme for his day at the helm of this iconic newspaper: reconcilliation and forgiveness for all the people of Colombia
“Beyond politics, economics and culture there is a basic place from where we should begin our journey, and it is in our imagination, and has no limits, “Juanes wrote in the Sept. 23 edition of El Tiempo
“I believe in peace, in that peace that is born from within the individual and then connects to a collective dimension, which recognizes and values the existence of conflicts, and transforms them creatively into new forms of coexistence?
According to Beiman Pinilla, design director at El Tiempo, “This was a fun exercise and we all loved having Juanes here. He really got into it and did not play the famous star at all; instead, he wanted to make sure that various sections of the newspaper emphasized his theme of solidarity, peace and reconciliation.”
And that was no song!
Maybe next El Tiempo will invite Shakira, the feisty Colombian singer who insists through her song that “hips don’t lie.”
Good newspaper editors also don’t lie, so Shakira should be the next ideal guest editor. With her well known Spanish football player boyfriend, Gerard Pique I imagine Shakira will be devoting lots of time to the sports section if she is invited as editor for a day.
Should be fun.

The New York Times debuts an HTML5 iPad web app to complement its native apps
http://www.niemanlab.org/2012/10/the-new-york-times-debuts-an-html5-ipad-web-app-to-complement-its-native-apps/
Highlight:
It’s a bold and potentially cross-platform experiment. But it’s unclear how it can (or why it should) compete with the Times’ better, native iPad app.
It promises to be a great program, and a historic one, too: the first SND Middle East gathering.  Put it on your calendars: November 8 & 9, in Beirut, Lebanon. Sponsored by An-Nahar and SND.
