Saturday Sequels

TAKEAWAY: Mario is still playing one of his favorite roles: grandfather. As a result, I am more of a media consumer (not a bad thing),and less a media participant. Here are some thoughts from the week.

The Week that Was

Dear friends out there, I continue to help my daughter Elena with her children, and I am enjoying every moment of it. True, it is busy work. During the course of a day I am a chauffeur, kitchen helper, nanny, bedtime storyteller, and, most importantly, doting grandpa.

It is fascinating to see why so many of the young mothers and fathers out there DO NOT have time to read a daily newspaper. I know. I am there now. This is my newspaper reading routine as I do the rest: I pick up a copy of the newspaper in front of my daughter’s house, glance at the lead headline, but can’t stop to read, as there is something that must be done first, as taking Danny to preschool and explaining to him why his mommy is still not ready to drive.

The rest of the day passes by quickly as I follow the program of pick ups, deliveries, snacks, kindergarten gym class and up to bedtime.

At 10 pm, I lie in bed with my copy of the St. Petersburg Times, scan the headlines and pass out before I get to the Metro section.

Interesting observation: my 32-year-old daughter Elena stops by her computer several times a day, to check on the news, emails, or to shop. It is quick, accessible, and, to her, the more natural thing to do.

Maybe it is the matter of convenience: online, one click and you get the one bit of information you need, when you want it, and sort of instant. The wrapped newspaper says: spend time with me (which is nice, if one has the time), I am a package to be consumed (hmmmmmmmmm, no time for this today).

I am learning from my experience as a media consumer in the American suburbs.

The Rodrigo Fino blog and typography

In his blog today, Rodrigo Fino presents some interesting thoughts about getting inspiration from typography. With the provocative headline “Type nourishes us”, Rodrigo goes on to tell us all about how he finds inspiration in a variety of type sources. He presents videos about type, and convinces us that inspiration is everywhere.
