It is great to be back after very much needed few weeks of vacation at the beach in two different continents.
I enjoyed my time with the family in Longboat Key, Florida, and also my annual sojourn to the land of my ancestors, The Canary Islands, where I stayed in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and enjoyed the charms of the island and the fantastic weather: never too hot, never cold, always breezy, with spectacular views.
I am not surprised that my first blog post after the summer vacation has to do with sound, and, specifically, with Podcasts.
A new study from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism reminds us how podcast consumption is growing in a number of countries and how monetization models are emerging. What I find of special interest is that the same study reveals that the appeal to younger people is the greatest here.
“:In Sweden and the United States, two countries that have embraced podcasts most, we find that over half of under 35s have used a podcast monthly compared with less than a fifth of over 55s.”
Fascinating to read that even those as young as 18 (the 18-24 segment) are among the largest percentage of the audience that used a podcast in the last month. Also of interest: The majority of podcast usage is at home (64%),
In case you wonder in which platform most are listening to their Podcasts: 55 % are doing so on their smartphone.
In his INMA Newsletter, media audience strategist and consultant , Grzegorz Piechota, reminds us of an important point:
Podcasts are not attractive to all users and not all topics find their audience, so one perhaps should find a niche first and focus on a differentiated subject.
In our part of the world many editors and publishers are still enjoying time off. However, in only a few weeks, it is back to work. I would set Podcasts high on the list of project planning once these executives return to work full of energy after a vacation.
It is no doubt a topic that will enhance their storytelling strategy, while perhaps helping with monetization efforts as well.
