TAKEAWAY: Pure Design’s installment today—-those very important captions under photographs. Treat them with care, write them well, and never leave them out.
I have often reminded editors that every photo needs a caption. Sometimes I get the argument that a photo is self explanatory. No such thing: photo captions enhance the content of the photo, or take us to a different dimension behind the scenes of the photo and the story. For scanners who may not read the articles accompanying the photos, captions may be “the story”. For all these reasons, I consider captions extremely important as scanning devices, story enhancements and, indeed, navigators, to keep the reader moving on a page.
