Norway’s Dagbladet: storytelling training

I spent most of Monday in Oslo conducting digital storytelling workshop for the creative team of Dagbladet. It was an inspiring and fun group.

This is the week of the Thanksgiving Holiday in the United States so that there will not be postings of TheMarioBlog until Monday, December 2, reporting from Hamburg, Germany.

As far as my mobile storytelling workshops, this one was special from the start. Attended by about 50 members of the Dagbladet team, the group included editors, reporters, designers, photographers, videographers and developers.

We took the group into the three areas that are the basis of my new mobile storytelling book, The Story: Transformation, Storytelling and Design. The session was followed by a Q & A session.

The day also included more of a “salon” type of session with a small group of members of the newspaper’s magazine team, Magasinet, with the discussion moderated by Trude Lorentzen, who heads the digital storytelling unit.

During this salon we got into actual step by step discussions of stories the team is now working on: how do we take those stories to mobile. Why not start planning for mobile, the smallest platform, then take it to larger platforms (such as print)?

From sketching to executing, our discussion included a variety of stories and emphasized the importance of the planning session when a story is first conceived.

Here are photos that show the beautiful settings of Dagbladet:

Here is a sculpture of a “newspaper boy” that I found interesting. I commented that we don’t see many paper boys delivering newspapers anymore.

Also these images, including the parting shot, where the team presented me with a giant bottle of bubbly and a Dagbladet coffee cup. That was a fun day.

All is well that ends well! Thanks, Dagbladet team.

Mario García

Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
