Monocle’s The summer Weekly is out.
The summer-only publication looks and reads like a newspaper, but a modern one at that. It is a total lean back product with longish pieces that take us to different places, or make us think about the place where we may be.
The lead story on this edition is about climate change:
“Hot summers will be the norm. Cities need spots to cool off. ”
Borrowing from the way stories are layered via headlines and decks in the digital world, here, too we see a 1 and a 2 to guide us to the two main points of the story.
Places are the main event here, but so are people. ranging from Texas Democratic politician Lupe Valdez, to Jill Morris, UK Ambassador to Italy & San Marino.
Business lead story takes us to the resort town of Cascais
A second section Design, Fashion, Travel, Food & Drink take us to all these topics. As Monocle has us accustomed already, the content here is useful, with inside info on what to look for from a hotel, and what to avoid. Also shopping tips for those going to Mykonos. For the jet setters who probably constitute a large segment of Monocle’s summer readership, the Resort Directory is a must. Try Saint-Tropez and get your cocktail at Le Club 55.
I always enjoy Monocle’s print edition. Perhaps as I age I find that the text type is too small, but if it was bigger perhaps the editors could not pack all the good stuff that is there now. Like its sister publication, Monocle Magazine, each page is chock full of news and photos. With few exceptions, the photos tend to be small, too, but abundant.
Sumptuous is the word.
There are few interruptions via ads in this product, but they are all full page or double page show stoppers.
Way to go!
