The Monocle address in Zurich is Dufourstrasse 90, and, like all things with that Brulesque touch, the place is inviting, cozy, and it feels like you are visiting your favorite aunt’s home. As you enter, there is the Monocle Cafe, inviting and welcoming. There is the M Trunk boutique (saw a wonderful blazer and belt that I am sure are featured in one of Monocle’s various platforms.)
The reason for my visit was to discuss the next day’s event for the launch of my new mobile book, The Story. Tyler was a gracious host to hold a Wednesday evening gathering of assorted types, from artists and architeccts to media practitioners. The event took place in the newsroom/radio studio and we had a lively discussion of mobile storytelling and the role of print, always a favorite topic with Tyler. During the interview he showed me a beautiful book of photos published recently by France’s Le Monde and asked:
“Do you see more titles publishing books like this?”
To which I answered that, indeed, doing print happily means exploiting what print can do best, as in large photos. Here you see is during the radio interview:
There is always something new cooking in the Monocle kitchen, and this visit was no exception.
“Take a look at this hot off the press first edition of the Monocle Winter Weekly: Edition 1,” Tyler said as he proudly showed me this beautifully designed tabloid newspaper, printed on good quality paper.
The second surprise for me was to hear that this Monocle Winter publication is printed across the Swiss border with Germany, at the Sudkurier printing plant in Konstanz. Â Sudkurier, as readers of TheMarioBlog know, has been one of my client newspapers for many years.
Those of us who have gotten used to the Monocle Summer Weekly will find that the Winter cousin is as packed with information and surprises.
It is a 3-section newspaper: First Book (News and Comment), Second Book (Business Culture, Design & Fashion), Third Book (Food, Drink & Travel).  The Winter publication is developed in Zurich, edited in London and printed in Konstanz—indicating that it is as mobile as its CEO/Publisher Tyler Brulé.
In this edition, one can follow the headlines:
“Socks can make a successful present, no, seriously…”
“Adelboden: The Ski Resort that Should Be your Next Base.”
“Lean Looks: The best attire for a whole new winter wardrobe…”
And, how about a food cover for Book 3 that takes us into a restaurant in the Dolomites, where a “canny couple” have turned an Alpine cabin into a new place that elevates the region’s cuisine.
And the advertising: gloriously displayed luxury items (of course, what would you expect in a publication under the watchful eye of Tyler Brulé, the so called king of lux?
This episode of Monocle’s The Stack was recorded live during the launch of my book, The Story, in Zurich, November 20 before a live audience. Tyler Brulé and I talk about the state of the media today, the makings of The Story, as well as the meaning of doing print happily in the mobile first era. Tune in here:
