Mobile Storytelling strategies at Dow Jones

Erin Sparling, head of newsroom development at Dow Jones, talks about storytelling strategies for the creation, curation and syndication of stories on mobile devices. Think story structures for the era of the journalism of interruptions.

I like how Erin Sparling uses the editor’s choice of how a story will be presented to tailor what how they will design it.  Is the story newsy (for What's News), or is it a lifestyle story (Mansions section).  The idea is to customize templates that allow changes to happen daily or even on an hourly basis.

This is a clear explanation of how the traditional “story structures” that we all have embraced for print, play a key, but different and more dynamic role, for mobile journalism.

In my own work I see how editors and designers are beginning to play with various, innovative storytelling strategies for mobile.  In the journalism of interruptions sometimes simple bullets, a quote and a photo, a graphic and a single sentence, or a collage of photos, tell the story quickly, tempting those elusive at a glance readers to come back for more later.

I predict that we will see more of the type of customized and experimental mobile storytelling in the months ahead.  The team work of reporters, editors, designers and developers is key to creating innovative mobile storytelling strategies.

Worth watching the short video.!
