Let’s hear it for those podcasts

As 2019 comes to a close, we will be reading about a lot of numbers associated with records the past 12 months. One important one: nearly 12000 podcasts that were launched globally between January and October.

It is all about sound, and if your newsroom does not have at least one podcast going, then start planning one, maybe to introduce it with the start of 2020.

Everywhere I turn, from small regional newspaper newsrooms, to  bigger ones, and even corporate communications departments, sound is the word.  Now an article quoting a study by the Reuters Institute gives us the numbers to back up what we have sensed by just visiting newsrooms.  Readers like to listen to podcasts, and not one style podcast fits all.

The Reuters Institute report, out this week finds publishers are making “significant investments” in news podcasting in the hopes of attracting younger audiences and bringing in new ad-driven revenue.

Reuters Institute has identified almost 60 daily news podcasts in five countries – US, UK, Australia, France and Sweden – the majority of which have launched within the last 18 months.

This week while I presented a concept for a weekend newspaper that is primarily digital, and with emphasis on mobile, podcasts were a very important part of the proposal, as you can see below:

Ironically, what podcasts do is what radio has done for a long time: to entertain us via our ears, to provide information and entertainment.  Some podcasts are devoted to a single subject, others deal with news round ups, and the most popular ones are deep dives, analysis of 20 minutes or more.  Journalists like single subject podcasts.

I plan to introduce a unit about the subject when my Columbia University Spring class begins.

Already my mobile storytelling book, The Story, includes a segment on podcasts, from where the following visuals were taken:

It is interesting to hear publishers who tell me about their quest for “radio voices” in the newsroom.  Sometimes it is the religion writer who has the perfect voice to narrate podcasts, and, in one case, an art director was “cast” for having the melodious voice for the task.

Mario García

Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.

The newspaper remains the most powerful source of storytelling on the planet. But technology threatens its very existence. To survive, the Editor must transform, adapt, and manage the newsroom in a new way. Order The Story by Mario Garcia, chief strategist for the redesign of over 700 newspapers around the world.
