The Two Tempos continue to thrive in newsrooms globally: the fast track of minute by minute and second by second updates of the news, and the slower track of curated material carefully selected to appear at a scheduled time, a discrete but complete serving of information that we appreciate because an editor has picked it especially for us.
In the lean back curated mode, The New York Times now has a new product, a sort of electronic newsletter called Times Insider Weekend Wrap. And that is exactly what this new offering does: provide us with headlines and images for important and/or interesting stories of the week that was.
All NYT subscribers get this email. Here are some samples of how headlines are presented:
The big story this week was the terror attack on Paris and related breaking news.
David Kirkpatrick reflects on the discussion of whether there is a connection between violence and Islam and the delicacy involved in raising incendiary questions.
Attacks on the press aren't new; David Dunlap visits the archives and gives Insiders an annotated look at Charles Merz's eloquent — and timely — 1956 defense of the free press and its animating ideals.
In addition photo teasers also appear to take us to feature stories we may have missed, or may wish to share with friends, or simply re read.
We happily add the Times Insider Weekend Wrap to our list of curated materials whose job is to seduce us into reading stories published by our favorite newspaper.
