Khaleej Times: second day of new look!

It is a “normal” size edition of the Khaleej Times this Friday, with extensive coverage of the UAE’s 50th anniversary celebration the day before.

As readers of TheMarioBlog know, we at Garcia Media were in Dubai this past week for the launch of a new “print design” concept for the Khaleej Times, one of the Dubai’s English-language dailies.

The launch December 2 coincided with the celebration of the United Arab Emirates’ 50th anniversary as a nation. We are very proud of how that first 162-page edition of the newspaper looked, and the excellent reception it had from readers and advertisers.

Today’s edition covers the 50th anniversary extensively and quite pictorially. Take a look at assorted pages here:

The front page continues to emphasize the big story of the day!

Today’s edition resembles a photo album of the festivities around Dubai and the nation.

Notice the “balcony” concept with the story of the celebration in numbers at a glance, something that scanners and digitally-minded readers appreciate:

Other interesting pages in today’s edition:

The double page treatment for The Long Read, with a grid that accommodates white space alleys to facilitate movement of the eye around the two pages:

The combination of balconies for secondary, accessory information, large photographs and long text contrasted with briefs at bottom of page:

The new City Times (ct):

This is the daily entertainment supplement of the Khaleej Times, published in tabloid format. With this transformation, the name City Times becomes simply ct in lower case letters:

The project team

This print design rethinking–carried out as a collaboration with my team at Garcia Media, senior art directors Paula Ripoll and Rodrigo Fino along with Khaleej Times’ talented design director, Raja Choudhury, but also with a year-long project led by editor-in-chief Vinay Kamat that aims at a total transformation for how the Khaleej Times (KT) approaches content flow in a multi-platform environment.

The type palette

  1. Lyon text (Family)
  2. Lyon Display (family)
  3. Stag (family)
  4. Bureaugrotcomp (family)

Marketing for a new product

What next for the KT?

Be on the lookout for more of the transformational elements of this project as the Khaleej Times continues to introduce them in the weeks and months ahead.
