This is the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog and will be updated as needed. The next blog post is scheduled Monday, December 9.
I thought this would make for a good weekend conversation piece by the fireplace, or while walking through the Christmas markets if you are in Europe, or while walking the mall anywhere in our dear USA.
It you liked The Love Boat, that sitcom that ran from 1976 to 1990 with dreamy destination settings, aging celebrity stars and a cast of amicable regulars, and if you are also a fan of James Bond movies, well, the two have something in common now: Futura Black.
Take a look here:
I always thought that Futura lacked personality, but we all got used to seeing it in The Love Boat’s long run. Now for anyone feeling nostalgia for the font, here it is again.
I liked what my friend, colleague and type guru Roger Black had to say about this in Facebook:
As long as they don’t use Trajan or Gotham, I’m happy with it.
At the end, I confess I like the James Bond movies I have seen, and I always welcomed The Love Boat into my living room way back when, even if I don’t like the font representing them. This happens sometimes with a favorite toothpaste or tomato sauce, right?
While the Newseum is closing, you still will be able to sample the popular “Today’s Front Pages” in the US and globally via the website and via its app. If you are like me, you go there often to see how certain major stories are displayed. When the Newseum closes, “Today’s Front Pages” will remain available →“Today’s Front Pages will remain active on the Newseum’s website and via its app.”

Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
