The old man and the sea revisited

blog post image

Friday early morning, Longboat Key, Florida; a gorgeous sunny day already at 7:30 am. Not a soul in sight as I do my run of about 5 miles. Suddenly , this pelican appears and stands on the edge of the water. Usually, pelicans move or fly away when they feel steps around them. Not this one. It seemed oblivious to my presence, doing its own meditation as the slow waves moved back and forth. Photo opp, I thought.

Germany prepares for the game

How does a newspaper prepare its readers for a game that may determine if their country competes in the World Cup 2010’s final this coming Sunday? Germany’s BILD does it with its usual gusto, a collage of photos with emphasis on the German flag colors. Fun page. Fun game ahead as Germany faces Spain to decide who battles Holland Sunday for the World Cup 2010 trophy!

Turtle photo sequence

Some of you know that I have collected turtles for many years, and have hundreds of the creatures in a variety of textures, from wood to cereamic to fine glass. Often, people who see my turtle collection at home ask me why I collect them: I like the fact that turtles make progress only when they stick their head out.

Today, an email from Frank Deville, in Luxembourg, brings a touch of turtle magic to my summer day. Frank was completing a long bike tour from Luxembourg to over the German border and back, when he suddenly saw a turtle along the road. Here is his photo report!
