It’s a mad, mad photo world

With everyone carrying a camera in their pocket, courtesy of their smartphone, it is no wonder we may be suffering from photo overload, indeed.

It’s a mad, mad photo world

As I continue to write my mobile storytelling book, The Story, I dig deeper into all types of research, even though I am aware that there will be new figures and concepts by the time I complete the first manuscript in about two weeks or so.  The world moves at speeds that even the mighty Concorde never attempted.  But there is another world that seems to more faster and more voluminously: the world of images.

The most mind boggling number I have come across is this: About 350 million photos are posted on to Facebook daily.  Just Facebook, mind you. IT does not include Instagram, Tweeter or Linkedin, where I confess that I am guilty of posting photos often.

Digesting that number makes me wonder what it takes for us to be totally anesthetized to images. Or, perhaps, photos are like M&Ms, those colorful chocolates that children of all ages crave. The more you eat the more you want more.

This may be the M&Ms era of photography. I remember how mesmerized I was when I saw the huge double page photos in the LIFE Magazine of my childhood.   We still see those photo displays in France’s Paris Match.  They still mesmerize, perhaps because, while may see millions of photos on the small screens of our smartphones, nothing beats a double page photo on which the eye may linger and the mind imagine things.

As I often say about writing, too: yes, everyone is a writer for social media purposes, but it means that we come to appreciate excellent writing more, as done by a journalist or fiction writing. Maybe the same happens with photos. We crave that image taken by a pro who knows all the right angles, and the content and the light.
