We are very excited that the final book in the trilogy of The Story, and the one dedicated to designing for mobile devices, is going to be available in Spanish in March 2022. Recently I sat with Thane Boulton, publisher, for a chat about Volume III. Here is our conversation:
The Thane & Prose Review sat down with content and design strategist Dr. Mario García to get an inside look at his new book, The Story Volume III: Design en Español, that will debut in March 2022.
TPR: Why was it important for you to give this to readers today?
MG: I feel like a man on a mission on everything having to do with spreading the word about the importance of mobile storytelling. It is a fact that, while a large percentage of our news consuming audience does so via mobile devices, we continue to create content that is more suitable for larger platforms, such as the screen of desktops and laptops, or the printed page. While the content is created for rectangular platform consumption, many are reading such content in a linear manner, scrolling down on their phone screens.
TPR: What was the biggest takeaway from the book?
MG: 1. The design of that first screen for your story is key, and you only have 4 seconds to seduce the reader with a headline and an image. 2. When conceptualizing content, think from small to large, with mobile as the first platform for which the content is designed. 3. Visual assets in a mobile, linear story are like paragraphs, helping to advance the story.
TPR: What do you think the future of mobile design will look like for designers?
MG: These are not only the best times to be a storyteller, indeed, they are also the most magnificent of times to be a visual storyeller. We can appeal to the senses in a variety of ways—from audio to video to the linear presentation of text and visual images. Mobile design is in its infancy, we will be able to do more as visual storytellers via virtual and augmented reality going forward. We will continue to explore storytelling not just for features and long reads, but for breaking news as well. More importantly, designing for mobile will require that we bring together content and formats in ways we never did before. For journalists and designers, this is a new, vibrant challenge. For the readers, the ultimate experience is when the three disciplines of writing/editing/design converge.
