In Kenya, it is all about Obama this week

TAKEAWAY: If one is not going to be in Washington D.C. Tuesday to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama as President of the United States, then perhaps the next best place has got to be in Kenya. Obamamania has hit this country, and I am happy to be here this week to witness it all. Plus: Thanks for your support. This weekend we welcomed visitor number One Million to TheMarioBlog.

Obama’s father was a Kenyan, so the locals are celebrating in grand style the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States . I wake up this Sunday in Nairobi to photos of Obama on the front pages of the newspaper.

But that is not all, advertisements inform readers about every detail of the inauguration, or how one can get Obama inaugural speech on their mobile phone, or celebratory prayer services at churches across the country today, and even the Obama Musical, a “victory show” at the Kenya National Theater from today thru Tuesday, described as a “story of Kenyan-American told in dance, music, song and narrative.”

I am here this week and will definitely be blogging about the spirit of celebration that embraces all Kenyans.

As my Kenyan driver told me on the way from the airport last night:

“We feel that President Obama is one of our own; we rejoice in the fact that he has Kenyan roots, it is a great day for Kenya, for America and for the world. You American people have shown the world how great you are by electing Obama.”

Front page ad for The New York Times

It was a matter of time, and the difficult economy should probably take the credit for this feat: The New York Times places an ad on page one. It looks good, and I am sure that this will not affect readers who are growing accustomed to seeing ads on the front page of their newspapers. It is done worldwide, but American newspapers have been late to get there. The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, along with dozens of regional metropolitan dailies, have already placed ads on Page One. It simply took that classic daily, NYT, a little longer to go that way.
