In Venezuela: when a newspaper runs out of paper

Panorama, a family-owned newspaper published in Maracaibo, has had a farewell edition–for now. It ran out of paper to print.

I remember fondly our work with the team of Panorama, the venerable newspaper of Maracaibo, Venezuela.  I particularly remember the enthusiasm of the newspaper’s young staff, and the traditions that a family-owned newspaper for three generations brought to each edition of Panorama.

That is what I was saddened to hear that Panorama printed its last edition on paper Tuesday, May 14, NOT because it has decided to do away with the printed edition , but because it has ran out of paper on which to print.

Venezuela is a country in political turmoil——some call it a violent Civil War—and nobody sees an end to the people’s suffering, the human rights violations and the hunger that seems to prevail in the oil-rich country. When the government makes it tremendously difficult for newspaper owners to buy paper on which to print, then freedom of the press is curtailed.

The official statement from the Panorama editors read:

“As our paper inventory has ran out, it is our turn to say goodbye for now to all our loyal readers of the printed edition of Panorama.”

At the same time, the editors encouraged everyone to continue reading Panorama online. “Our mission  to inform will continue with the same responsibility and dedication via www.panorama.com.

There will be a special Farewell edition of Panorama “to say thanks and show our gratitude to all of the newspaper’s readers.”

It’s time for the people of Venezuela to get a break, for those holding on to power to give up and for a new and democratic government to set the country on the right path, with freedom of the press and a return to the Venezuela that afforded its citizens a better quality of life.

Best wishes to our friends at Panorama!  And, may your retreat from print be very temporary.
