In Sweden: more than one way to monetize content

For the newspaper Dagens Nyheter it pays to offer readers a variety of options when it comes to paying for what they read.

I have always enjoyed the innovative Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter. In fact, I had the honor of working with the DN team a few years ago when Joachim Berner was its editor in chief. We did a refresh of the design of DN at the time and I worked closely with the art director and designers to give the paper a fresh look, as well as for its supplements.

Now I read about the Dagens Nyheter approach to paywalls, which I also find quite refreshing. It offers options, which is what it is all about with monetizing efforts. One size does not fit all, and neither does only one option. I recommend to my clients that they consider various possibilities, since not two groups of readers are the same.

That is why I was interested in this piece that tells us that Dagens Nyheter offers three paywall options as follows:

  • The first, a meter where readers can access three articles a week, accounts for 10% of the title’s conversion to subscribers.
  • The second, a premium model where two or three daily lifestyle articles are for subscribers, converts 30% of prospects.
  • The third, introduced in early 2017, is based on how well an article is received: Articles that reach a certain amount of traffic in the first three to four hours go behind the paywall. According to the publisher, this accounts for 60% of its conversion rate, on average 50 articles per week hit these criteria.

These are good models for publishers to look at. Again, the Scandinavian newspapers continue to be at the top of innovation.
