In Chile: La Tercera goes for major digital transformation

La Tercera has always been one of the most innovative newspapers in Chile. Now it does it again, with a program focused on establishing itself as a leader in digital journalism, and creating the type of subscription packages that will guarantee it success.

This is the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog and will be updated as needed. The next blog post is Monday, June 3 (reporting from Berlin).

I admit that the first thing that caught my eye when I ran into this article, written in Spanish and published by Laboratory de Periodismo (Journalism Lab), was the image you see here. The headline on the front page of La Tercera reads:
Journalism no longer fits into print

La Tercera’s editor,  José Luis Santa María, goes further:

“….quality journalism no longer fits into paper. We must be capable of informing, interpreting and contextualizing 24 horas thru the various platforms and formats.”

1. A new newsroom organization for the “new challenges”

A first team of section heads, which right now concentrates mostly on the print edition, will now turn their attention to how content flows across all platforms.

A second team will be in charge of breaking news only, with responsibility for the day to day of the print edition, but with emphasis also on weekend editions.

2.- Focusing on the users

It is necessary to create structures that digitize information, but not just that, the editors believe that there is a need to get closer to the users, to understand how they react and consume information.La Tercera has started this with the creation of new products, such as  La Tercera PM, Culto, Mouse as well as podcasts.

3.- Digital subscriptions for all

This is quite revolutionary.

All print subscribers automatically become digital subscribers, to pay back the loyalty of these subscribers who have accompanied La Tercera for many years.AT the same time, La Tercera executives believe that with digital subscriptions there has to be added value. In this regard, the editor says that it is not just adding content but offering journalism of the highest quality.

I think these are all sound steps.

I am still contemplating that headline on the front page: Journalism no longer fits into print.

Hummmm.
