My past blog posts on the subject of artificial creative intelligence show that sometimes the bots do well and we could easily utilize their illustrations.
However, there are instances where the context and details that a human illustrator brings to the illustration are still not possible to obtain from Midjourney or DALL-E.
For example, El Pais of Madrid recently showcased its last column written by Nobel Prize winner novelist and journalist Mario Vargas Llosa, who has been doing so for El Pais for 33 years. Vargas LLosa has announced that, after 70 years as a writer, he is retiring from both literature and journalism.
The illustration created by El Pais’ illustrator, Fernando Vicente, shows Vargas Llosa sitting down reading a print edition of El Pais with an illustration of his face on the front page, as well as a headline that identifies him as Nobel Vargas Llosa.
Here is the illustration created by El Pais’ Fernando Vicente:
The AI versions
I attempted to get a similar illustration from Midjourney, but none of these equal the one produced by a human. While the image of Vargas Llosa does look like him (younger version), the newspaper he holds in his hands is generic.
The Midjourney illustrations do not tell the story fully. Context— the human touch—makes the difference.
And an important difference it is.

As I put finishing touches on the manuscript of my new book, AI: The Next Revolution for Content Creation, I am aware that the number of AI-related headlines that appear in my mailbox daily is on the increase, frustrating the author of a book that must have a date of completion, and realizing that in today’s fast paced technological advance environment, books must have websites created for updates.
