And what a treat this is, whether you are an editor, designer or simply a person who enjoys looking at letters. It is fascinating to see what is behind the creation of a letter form.
In fact, Jonathan Hoefler says something to that effect in this inspiring episode of the Netflix series:
“Every letter you see, a hand has actually created.”
Hoefler’s hand and those of his team have created many of the popular typefaces we see all around us. I have personally utilized many fonts from the Hoefler collection in a variety of my projects. Go to typography.com and check out the many styles of fonts to suit whatever needs a designer may have.
Back to Abstract: The Art of Design. If you have not tuned in to this series, do so pronto. It is primo material on a variety of design disciplines. See the trailer here:
The moment you take a look, you will be hooked. How can you not be with phrases like these:
Design is Essential
Design is Impactful
There has to be something better than what was there before.
We must design where we are going from here.
In his own segment, Hoefler takes us to the reason that we are in such close contact with type as we go about our daily life, from the buttons on the elevator panel, to a sign around a trash can, to store front signs.
Then he proceeds to show us what inspires him, plus drawings of his own type designs:
Abstract: The Art of Design is a Netflix original documentary series highlighting artists in the field of design. It was released on Netflix on February 10, 2017. The series was created by former Wired editor-in-chief Scott Dadich.

Mario García
Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
