Get ready for the bookazines

The good news for magazines is that they are making money by extending their brands beyond the regularly published editions.

Yes, you read that word right: bookazines, a combination book and magazine. Perhaps you need to add that term to your vocabulary.

Perhaps because of the Covid19 pandemic and how it forced us to isolate and stay home, people have learned to rely on magazines to keep them informed and sane. The specials range from a Saturday Evening Post 50th-anniversary commemoration of the death of President John F. Kennedy to a Life special on the Beatles.

This piece from CNN, tells us how magazine titles in the US have turned to their archives to produce bookazines that zero in on a topic and develop fully. Find it at your supermarket checkout.

Highlight:

The pandemic has introduced additional stress to the already struggling magazine industry, but it may have boosted the success of bookazines. Meredith (
MDP), which publishes People, Food & Wine and dozens of other popular titles, said last week its newsstand revenuegrew by $3 million in the past quarter compared to the year prior. Its earnings report specifically cited bookazines, which are usually presented as single-topic, in-depth magazines often marketed to consumers as collectors’ items.

Inquire about our mobile storytelling workshops!

Every week I bring my mobile storytelling workshop to a different newsroom around the world. I begin with a 90-minute presentation about the essentials of crafting/editing/designing stories for mobile consumption. Then I break the participants into groups and for two hours they produce a mobile story which they then present to the entire group for evaluation. It works all the time.

Another type of Garcia Media program is when we sign up for mobile storytelling coaching after completion of the first workshop. Once a week, or as planned, I work virtually with a team of reporters, editors, designers on actual stories that will be published as linear mobile stories. Let me know if you are interested in more information: mario@garciamedia.com
