This is how. Ralf Geisenhanslueke, editor in chief of Osnabruecker Zeitung introduced the new design of his newspaper to the readers:
“You know this from your personal environment: from time to time your facade needs a new coat of paint or the living room is being refurbished. We have also redesigned “our house”. From Tuesday, March 30th, we will present ourselves in a new, fresher look. We have revised our appearance, the newspaper layout, and adapted it to the challenges of modern journalism. We keep the good and develop the elements that have come in time. We would like to present you the strong content that we research and write for you even better. In short: our aim is to make a newspaper that suits you.”
Here’s congratulation the teams of these very local newspapers in northern Germany, part of the NOZ group which have all launched what the Germans describe as “new optics” to make a reader’s journey through the print edition of their newspaper easier.
This is not what you would call a full redesign, but it was a methodical, well studied way of looking at every page of these local newspapers which are so dear to the readers, and finding ways to do two things:
I worked closely with the editors and staffers of each of the titles through a variety of in person workshops in Hamburg. The Garcia Media team of Rodrigo Fino and Paula Ripoll, senior art directors, assisted me.
