From here and there: observations on the road

Observations along the way: it’s been 17 days on the road, with tons of flying time in between, an opportunity to dive into heavy reading from here and there.
Here are some of the things that interested me the most.

Sounds familiar?

Oh, my God. I am reading the headline in Brazil’s Folha de Sao Paulo and it could be a headline from The New York Times referring to Trump.

Brazil’s leading presidential candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, has mentioned in a speech that Folha de Sao Paulo, one of the country’s largest circulation newspapers, is all about “fake news”.  In the United States, it is quite common for President Trump to refer to “the failing New York Times” as a major fake news publication.

Interesting treatment of story

While in Berlin, got a copy of the Oct. 23 Tagesspiegel. On the cover, a large photo image of Putin and Trump, with the headline: The new cold war.

Branded content studio for South China Morning Post

Just this week I was discussing the benefits that sponsored content can provide for a news organization, and not just monetarily. When sponsored content is well done, the stories can be as interesting as those produced by the editorial team. There is no reason why it should not be this way.  I find myself reading sponsored content, especially in the areas of health, fitness and nutrition—and often travel.

Now, one of our former clients, the South China Morning Post, based in Hong Kong, has launched its branded content studio under the name ‘Morning Studio’.

Highlight:

“The branded content arm is a new part of a long-term answer to clients needs, according to SCMP. In 2009 it launched the ‘Marketing Solutions Team’ and the launch of Morning Studio adds weight to its output with the inclusion of design and editorial talent. According to SCMP, Morning Studio’s output will include online content, sponsored supplements, bespoke publications and customized events.”

Crowd pleaser

It’s Germany’s Bild, that one of a kind broadsheet newspaper with the biggest headlines, the most uncoordinated color palette, the larger than life stories and the page grid that nobody can ever figure out. But, oh, how those German readers love their Bild.  Somehow nobody claims that he reads it, but some 2.25 copies are printed., with about 5 million readers. You can see German tourists in the beaches of Spain reading Bild as they take the sun.

It’s still my fantasy redesign project. Where does one start?  And, no matter what anybody does redesigning, the chaos of Bild must be maintained. It works!

Love those small format newspapers

When in beautiful Vienna, I always enjoy a Wiener Schnitzel, a run through StadtPark and the size of those small newspapers, such as my dear Kleine Zeitung. It is handy, easy to carry, easy to read. Why are more newspapers in this so called A4 format?

My Speaking Engagement Today

I am honored to give a keynote presentation in New York City today for the Eidos Media’s  3rd Annual Future Financial, an event that emphasizes best practices in digital financial publishing.  My presentation is titled:
