Folha: A world without barriers

https://arte.folha.uol.com.br/mundo/2017/un-mundo-de-muros/

From Folha de Sao Paulo comes this impressive multimedia story headlined A World of Barriers.

The intro reads like this:

In a world that is more interconnected each time we continue to build barriers and fences to keep those that it considers undesirable out. In 2001 there were 17 such barriers, but today the number is 70.

So the Folha team traveled to four continents to tell stories of how different countries divide their populations, or stop the flow of refugees, or hide poverty, or fear. Barriers also divide some from war, inequality or climate change. The multimedia story tells about what and who are behind those borders.

I liked the impressive use of visuals through these stories, which are segmented by countries, and in two cases, the barriers exist within one country, as in the case studies of Brazil and Peru.

Multimedia, yes; linear for mobile, no

While this Folha story deserves high praise for its combination of a first class journalistic piece, with breathtaking images and videos, I would not describe it as a linear story for mobile. Why? Well, the texts are separated by visuals—mostly collages of photos, and some videos—-but those are not necessarily linked to the text above them.

I imagine that the story was written in the traditional style as narrative, then the many visuals and videos added.

The audience will enjoy this piece tremendously, as so did I as we discussed it in my workshop in Bogota this week. The story wowed all the participants! And me, too.

Bravo, Folha!

Mario García

Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
